Job Title: Assistant to the Director

Reports to: Director

Mission Statement: The Ottawa County Historical Society (OCHS) was organized to preserve and to perpetuate the history of Ottawa County, Oklahoma and its people.

The Society operates the Dobson Museum and Home, in Miami, OK. and seeks to collect objects and archival materials from individuals or groups relating to Ottawa County and immediate related areas.

Summary: The purpose of this position is to assist with museum day to day operations and the director with tours, projects, and publicity of the museum and historic home.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • 1. Assist the director with any special projects and normal day to day assigned duties
  • 2. Promote the Dobson Museum & Home for tours/venue opportunities
  • 3. Assist director and OCHS volunteers on exhibit ideas and design
  • 4. Submit the historic photograph from museum collections to Miami News Record by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday (weekly) and record all submissions from those who identify the historic photographs
  • 5. Establish and author a newsletter for the OCHS membership on a quarterly basis. The newsletter should be published in March, June, September, and December each year. The newsletter needs to be submitted to the director no later than the first day of the previous month before publication for review. It will need to be sent to the printers and mailed to arrive to members by the first week of designated publication month. (Example: March newsletter should be submitted to director no later than February 1st to be mailed by March 1st)
  • 6. Assist with volunteer orientation and training
  • 7. Provide assistance to research requests following established/adopted policies
  • 8. Dedicate time to work on data entry for past perfect (computer software for museums) This program is able to house the information for museum collections such as artifacts, library materials, research materials, photographs, archives, etc.
  • 9. Allot weekly time to scan photos/negatives within the museum archives and collections
  • 10. Conduct and record events and individual interviews of historical significance
  • Assist with off-site marketing of the museum at the Ottawa County Fair, Miami FestiFall, Miami Business & Industry Expo, etc.
  • 12. Develop or assist with an annual event to promote the museum with elementary schools throughout the county


Minimum Qualifications:
  • • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in History, Art, Museum Studies, and/or any related field from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • • Ability to interact effectively and build relationships with internal and external parties
  • • Proficient in computers and software applications including Microsoft Office, and social media platforms. Preferably Past Perfect Museum Software.
  • • Ability to operate general office equipment.
  • • Strong writing and communication skills to be able to work with diverse groups.
  • • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with staff, volunteers, and patrons.

Compensation $15/hr. up to 40 hours/week
